Thought someone may be interested in some pics of this little cheap set.

Uses an LA1800 which I can't remember having been mentioned before.

Interesting. When would this have been manufactured? It's surprising to see anything with a variable capacitor in it these days.

I think it came free with some sort of gym equipment, about ten years ago. (Can't remember what).

(It is a "headphone-set" with AM and FM bands)

I see in the datasheet that this chip contains a MW TRF receiver, similar to the ZN414 TRF receiver IC. If you want to build a MW superhet with the LA1800, you have to add a separate RF front end stage.

it's probably one of the ones used in AM/FM clock radios - I've bought enough of them from garage sales and op shops in the past to strip for parts. The saving grace is usually the coil, tuner cap. speaker. transformer, 9 volt battery clip etc. The earphone socket, + the VR1 volume control. $15+ worth of parts for $5.00 on average.
