Hello all

I'm new to the board and just retired. I found the board while searching regen receivers. So thought I would try for some good advise or opinion.
I'm looking at building a receiver and ran accross a print for an A.R.R.L.
Ham receiver in a copy of the 1937 Hammarlund Short Wave Manual.
Has anyone tried this set and is it a valid project worth the time and parts
search? I others are better for a first timmer I'd like to know. I like the
glow of old tubes and love to tinker. Been in telecom industry for many years so I have some experiance with electronics but never tried to scratch build things like this. All comments and suggestions would be
appreciated. Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

Welcome to our addiction.

I'm not familiar with the set from the ARRL handbook, but I can tell you there are a lot of options.

I think the best start is a simple regen. You can do this for broadcast or SW. Take a look at some of Dave's tube sets on this site, you'll get a lot of ideas.

Good Luck!
Tim

Dan,

Found the '37 manual, looked up your schematic. Looks good but let me
make one suggestion for using that one. 58 and 56 tubes are pretty hi
current filaments. My '37 Sylvania tube manual recommends substituting
6D6's for the 58's and a 76 for the 56. These are -direct- replacement
tubes as far as characteristics and have 6.3V/.3A filaments. They will be
much easier to keep glowing ;-)

Dan,

A followup. I sat down and continued on reading in that 37 manual.
Whoops, there is a second receiver also listed as an ARRL set.

The first (with 58's and a 76) is listed on pg 15 as the 'Radio Amateurs
Handbook 3 tube Bandspread AC Set' and the second on pg 26 is called
'The ARRL Ham Receiver'.

Which one were you referring to???

PS the second one would be much easier to tackle for a first set. I do
apologize for not looking all the way through the book first for possible
conflicts.

Fred

Fred & Tim

Thanks for the help so far. The manual I have is the 1937 Hammarlund
Short Wave and the receiver is on page 26. This is printed by Lindsay Publications. The tubes for this seem to be a 30 and a 33 for the audio
amp. For the A.R.R.L. "HAM" Receiver. This is my first attempt at all this
so I need all the help I can get to get started. If you have this receiver
in your copy please advise.

THANKS
Dan

Dan,

I do have that manual but no havent built the set. Did you get the PM
I sent you??

Gus dropped me a line about the schematic. Best I could do is X-copy
larger then do a digital photo.

BTW youall take a look at Daves 32/32/31 set as another possible idea.
Regens really should have an RF stage to keep osc out of the antenna ;-)

Thanks for steering me to Dave's 3 tube. I like design and it's a tested
receiver and right you are about the need for an RF stage before the
detector stage. I'm a little rusty at this. My tube days ended in 1968
when I got out of the Navy. Think I will see if I can come up with most
of it from the junk box. It's good to be put on the right track. (:>)

Dan

P.S. Will probably be bugging you mor before this project is over.
Thanks again.
