Hi Guys,

I stumbled onto this while doing a Google search for something unrelated. That happens a lot, and it has taken me to some interesting sites!

Is this truly a uni-directional loop with just one lobe? I've not seen anything like it before.

Take a look a the K9AY, "Flag" and "Pennant" loops, which are all over the web. Same idea, might work better across the band.

Jim,

I can't see the connection between the "monitor antenna" and the ewe, flag or pennant antennas. The latter are only single turn loops, which are terminated with a resistor, and the enclosed area of the loops is much larger.
The part that I question is that the configuration supposedly produces a loop with only one lobe, rather than the figure-eight pattern of virtually every other multi-turn loop that I've ever encountered.

My guess is that he was trying to make the loop dimensions shorter by using multiple turns. If you look at the second drawing, it represents the loop as a single turn, and from that perspective it resembles a K9AY. Replacing the 500-pF cap with a 200-ohm resistor (K9AY antennas use variable resistors to set front-to-back ratio for a certain band of frequencies) would probably make this one work better across the MW BCB. He only cares about 770 kHz. This antenna might be a good option for DXing, as it could be turned with a TV rotator.
