I found an interesting wire antenna here: http://www.comportco.com/~w5alt/antennas/index.php?pg=4 . Basically is's an off-center-fed half-wavelength antenna that uses no feedline and connects directly to the rig, for transmitting purposes.

I suppose you could do the same thing with a dipole (connect the wires directly to the rig with no feedline), but as I understand it maximum radiation occurs from the dipole center, so you don't want that point at the rig. I'm not sure how the off-center-fed version at the above link works, but the author seems pretty pleased.

Are there other simple wire antennas that require no feedline and no tuner?

I found another no-tuner and almost-no-feedline antenna called the "resonant feedline dipole", which is physically end-fed but electrically the same as a center-fed dipole and requires no tuner. By using a choke, the RF is flowing both on the inside and outside of the coax shield, with the outside of the shield thus becoming the second leg of the dipole. Pretty neat, and it sounds easy to set up - place one end high and clear, and the other at the rig, and you're done. Anyone tried one of these?

Well, this one is no tuner, but extra feedline and switches.

That antenna will work as written up on the WorldRadio site, but bear in mind that 1/4-wavelength of the coax is radiating and also susceptible to nearby objects. TANSTAAFL®
