I stumbled across an old photo of a loop I found interesting. I don't plan on building one like it, but I thought it might fuel some ideas for someone else.

It's on the last page of this .pdf file, lower right hand corner with just minimal info.

Imagine doing THAT with your favorite litz wire!

Enjoy!

There are six "flowers," making a hexagonal loop.

Each flower has 10 petals, each petal corresponding to one turn of wire.

Each petal has 12 turns. The 12 turns are joined in one junction, forming a single turn.

There is a LOT of wire on that loop!

Sorry, folks, I'm not impressed, other than it's a fine example of the gimmickery that was rampant at the time.

For starters (and this has been discussed before), the spacing of all those wires has little-to-zero effect upon the distributed capacitance. The diameter of the loop primarily determines that. Even if distributed capacitance is present . . . if it's low loss, who cares ?

In each 12-wire element, the innermost wires are shorter than the outermost wires, i.e., their lengths are different. This possibly could cause phase differences between the wires at their very ends, and broadened tuning overall. Good or bad ? I'm not sure.

If one could find 120 degree elbows (135 degrees, for an octagonal loop), then such a loop made out of half-inch copper pipe would be impressive -- to look at, anyway.

Strung tight enough and placed in the wind it might sing like an aeolian harp. Neighbors would wonder if they were developing tinnitus.

I love to read these old magazines too. I backspaced through the URL and found the index page which has LOTS more old magazines to read:
http://www.americanradiohistory.com/index.htm

This is like treasure to me and really deserves a thread of it's own where members could share other links to old publications.

$175 for a radio back in 1924 was just shy of a king's ransom. But it's about the same if we wanted a top end big screen TV now.

Those old papers are so cool to read.

I'm really glad the link was enjoyed!

These old magazines are a great source of info for me, I am always fascinated by the advertisements and photos which are a good source for dating old parts. The gimmickery advertised makes good entertainment.

A brief article about a Buffalo, NY radio station being heard in South Australia in 1924 is pretty interesting, but no details were given about the receiver. It's something to aim for.

The relatively low-power Australian stations around Alice Springs are sometimes heard in the US Northeast. They're on ~2000 kHz, but there are two powerhouse stations on 1520 kHz in the U.S. that you probably could hear in NSW once in a while. One is WWKB (formerly WKBW) in Buffalo, NY; the other is KOKC in Oklahoma City, OK. Both run the U.S. legal limit of 50 kW.

WWKB's pattern protects KOKC to the west. But its orientation is such that you might receive it "long path," looking NW at your sunrise.

KOKC's nighttime pattern protects WWKB. Despite its NW skew, they're often strong here in South Florida, sometimes overriding WWKB. Both stations play havoc with reception of Saudi Arabia on 1521 kHz. I wouldn't be surprised if you could hear KOKC around your local sunset time.

Both stations are, unfortunately, News-Talk format, but they run local advertising. It's unlikely you'd hear KOKC long path or WWKB short path, so the time of day will be a good clue. You can stream KOKC online.

WWKB has a website and TuneIn claims to stream them, but I couldn't make it work. :?

Give it a try!
