I am building a solid state reciever. I dont want this to be stationary, I will want to move it in different parts of the house. The end product will be about 8x10". I think a 5 to 10 inch antenna would be nice.
So my question is: Is there a way to go around this? Can you fake a ground? Is there an IC that exists to us as an antenna/ground? Cell phones for example, no longer need an antenna. What changed?
I would just like to be able to move this thing around when finnished. I wont be amused by dragging around a water pipe, and a multiple foot antenna.

My goal for now is to listen to multiple AM stations.

Thanx in advance.

Why not use a loop antenna wound on a ferrite rod? Then you won't need a ground.

Cellphones still have antennas. They are inside the case. Due to the very high frequency (~1 GHz), the antenna is very small.

Loop antennas are great.
