golfguru - Western Union always wanted "mechanically secure" first, then solder it. Had to see the wire outline thru the solder, one "blob" and yer outta here.

Similar here - on mainframes "the boss" would run the back of his hand over the 100 pair blocks and one scratch meant resoldering the whole block (no sharp "dags"). :)

sounds like the training I got before populating circuit boards in critical telecom equipment.
every single joint was inspected with microscope and then 100% where tested for function and then 4% random sample tested to destruction, computer gave serial numbers to prevent bias.

basically the rules below applied.
no "cold joints"
no dirt, oxidation...
no flux remains
no solder-bridges
no blobs
no sharp edges
mechanical connection first
solder just to secure and protect
wires neatly trimmed
components neatly placed
